Description
Wyatt Earp (1848-1929) is the most famous lawman who rode the Old West, even though he wore a badge only a few years.
He was portrayed in movies from such pedestrian actors as Buster Crabbe and George Montgomery to the sublime Henry Fonda, in John Ford's 1946 "My Darling Clementine."
Director Ford (1894-1973) was a pallbearer at Earp's 1929 funeral, along with the great cowboy film stars, William S. Hart and Tom Mix.
Ford claimed to have heard from Earp's own lips, the true account of "The Battle at the OK Corral." That is highly doubtful as "Clementine" is filled with numerous factual errors. (Ford was famous for his Irish "blarney" and/or treating interviewers with barely audible mutterings of contempt.)
This image of Earp takes the prize for most reproduced shot of him. The public domain photo can be legally reproduced even for use in advertising. Most museums archiving images of the Old West have bootlegged copies of it. The photographer is unknown to history.
"Fast is fine, but accuracy is everything."
"That nothing's so sacred as honor and nothing's so loyal as love."...Wyatt Barry Stepp Earp
