Description
Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890) wins the trophy for largely unrecognized, poverty stricken genius, who couldn't exchange a painting for a glass of absinthe; but whose work commands millions today. His "Starry Night" (1889) is one of his most popular in reproductions. It was painted 13 months before his premature death at 37.
Kirk Douglas did a very credible job playing van Gogh in the Vincent Minnelli directed "Lust For Life" in 1956. Color is so very important in van Gogh's mature work. It is ironic that MGM, for budgetary reasons, used a color stock for the film that quickly faded. Edward G. Robinson is thanked in the credits. He had one of the finest private collections in the world, which he subsequently sold in a divorce settlement.
"I am seeking, I am striving. I am in it with all my heart."
"What would life be if we had no courage to attempt anything."
"I dream my painting and the I paint my dream,"...Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890)

"Van Gogh began to draw as a child, and he continued to draw throughout the years that led up to his decision to become an artist. He did not begin painting until his late twenties, completing many of his best-known works during the last two years of his life. In just over a decade, he produced more than 2,100 artworks, consisting of 860 oil paintings and more than 1,300 watercolors, drawings, sketches and prints. His work included self portraits, landscapes, still lifes, portraits and paintings of cypresses, wheat fields and sunflowers."
