Artist's Description

The Maxwell House (1890), in the ghost town of Georgetown, Colorado, was named after its 50 year plus resident mining engineer Frank Maxwell. It is an outstanding example of Victorian architecture.

Peter Max is most identified with the psychedelic movement in graphic design in the late 1960's. He had arrived when making the cover of Life Magazine in September 1969. Max works in multiple media. His childhood reads like an Errol Flynn adventure movie. Born in Berlin in 1938, he lived in Shanghai, China for 10 years, then Tibet for a year, Israel, Paris and finally New York City.

While at the U of A, I studied with the master black and white photo essayist W. Eugene Smith (1918-1978) the last year of his life. I am the last person cited in Jim Hughes' definitive biography of Gene, as I wrote about attending his final...
