Artist's Description

The Santa Rita as seen in 1947, the year Gene Autry (1907-1998) made "The Last Outpost" at Old Tucson and at San Xavier Mission.

Betty Hutton (1921-2007) stayed at the Santa Rita when she made "Incendiary Blonde" (1945) in Tucson. She lost a diamond ring in a drain at the hotel, but it was recovered after she had left town.

Also in 1945 the fable is woven that Gregory Peck (1916-2003) rode his horse into the lobby when cast and crew of David O. Selznick's (1902-1965) "Duel in the Sun" (1946) made the hotel their headquarters.

In 1979 I earned a MA in drama from the University of Arizona; earlier getting a BA in English from the University of Minnesota, where I co-founded the first film society on campus and ran it for four years. While at the U of A, I studied with the master black and white photo essayist W. Eugene Smith (1918-1978) the last year of his life. I am the last person cited in Jim Hughes' definitive biography of Gene, as I wrote about attending his final...
