Description
"I wasn't the leader of any gang. I was for Billy all the time." - Billy the Kid {1859-1881) to a Las Vegas reporter after his capture at Stinking Springs, New Mexico.
{This 2x3" portrait, of Billy packing a Colt revolver and classic 1873 Winchester carbine, sold for $2.3 million in 2010 when it was believed to be the only surviving photo of the outlaw. But in October 2015 a 1878 picture of the Kid playing croquet was authenticated by experts after more than a year of scrutiny.
The 4x5" tintype was purchased for $2 in 2010 by Randy Guijarro of Freemont, California as a part of a miscellaneous lot at a Fresno junk shop; and could command up to $5 million if sold. Billy is only one of more than some 17 individuals and two horses on view in the image.
An original picture of Billy is considered "The Holy Grail" of Western Americana.}
