Description
Marlene Dietrich's pre-Code "Shanghai Express" (1932) is a visual treat with its exotic, beautifully sculptured lighting.
Often foreign posters are far more arresting than those made in America. This French one is a beauty.
"Shanghai Express" is the 5th of 8 films she made with director Josef von Sternberg (1894-1969), who had discovered her and made her a star in "The Blue Angel" (1930).
{Note: I attended a lecture in 1964 von Sternberg gave at the University of Minnesota where he showed his favorite and final Dietrich collaboration, "The Devil is a Woman" (1935); a film for which he was also his own director of photography.
It was also Dietrich's favorite of all her films. Run-ins with Spanish censors caused Paramount to destroy all the known prints. Pack rat Dietrich had squirreled a 35mm print away in a bank vault, which became the master for all subsequent prints.}
