Artist's Description
This 1975 neo-noir is the third version of the Raymond Chandler (1888-1959) novel. I rate Robert Mitchum as the best, private detective Philip Marlow, better than Bogart, Robert Montgomery or Dick Powell. "Mitch" wore only one suit in the film, which had been worn by Victor Mature in the 1940's. He constantly complained that the clothing had never been laundered since.
"Lovely" was photographed by John Alonzo (1934-2001) who had shot the neo-noir masterpiece, "Chinatown," the year earlier. A portion of the film was set in an L.A. brothel.

I am the last person cited in Jim Hughes' definitive biography of Gene, as I wrote about attending his final...
