Artist's Description
Italian born Frank Capra (1897-1991) had one of the most brilliant directing film careers in the 1930's. He began to slip after 1948's "State of the Union," and fell apart in the 1950's and early '60's. His autobiography "The Name Above the Title" is replete with omissions and fabrications. But his 1930's triumphs put Columbia on the map. "Dirigible" dates from 1931.
The Goodyear blimp was shot at Tucson, Arizona International Airport in 1972.
One of the most dramatic events captured in the newsreels was the 1937 destruction of the dirigible Hindenburg.
The first 14 seconds are in Spanish then the still moving live radio reporting of Herb Morrison.

While at the U of A, I studied with the master black and white photo essayist W. Eugene Smith (1918-1978) the last year of his life. I am the last person cited in Jim Hughes' definitive biography of Gene, as I wrote about attending his final...
