This is the only film (1953) that Dr. Seuss (Theodor Geisel, 1904-1991) was involved with during his lifetime. Unlike his enormously popular books, it sank at the box office. Director Roy Rowland (1910-1995) blamed producer Stanley Kramer (1913-2001) who dramatically sliced and diced his final cut.
I fondly remembering seeing this film at the RKO Orpheum theater in St. Paul, Minnesota. I had the tough choice of either "Dr.T" or "Shane" across the street at the Paramount. As much as I adored Westerns, the fantasy film of the imagination won out.

I first became obsessed with photography and motion pictures while growing up in post WW2 Manila in the Philippine Islands in the late 1940's/early 1950's. Film noirs were a particular influence. But my first love remains the theater. I acted in numerous amateur productions from 1958 to 1978. In 1979 I earned a MA in drama from the University of Arizona; earlier getting a BA in English from the University of Minnesota, where I co-founded the first film society on campus and ran it for four years. While at the U of A, I studied with the master black and white photo essayist W. Eugene Smith (1918-1978) the last year of his life. Hi Allen, I am intrigued by what triggers a person's response to my images. Often it is is based on a youthful experience. The Alfred E. Newman graffiti picture is one of my favorites.
