"Dame Vera Margaret Lynn, CH, DBE (nee Welch; born 20 March 1917, widely known as 'The Forces' Sweetheart,' is an English singer, songwriter and actress whose musical recordings and performances were enormously popular during the Second World War.
During the war she toured Egypt, India and Burma as part of ENSA, giving outdoor concerts for the troops. The songs most associated with her are 'We'll Meet Again,' 'The White Cliffs of Dover,' 'A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square' and 'There'll Always Be an England.' She remained popular after the war, appearing on radio and television in the UK and the United States and recording such hits as 'Auf Wiederseh'n Sweetheart' and her UK Number one single 'My Son, My Son.' Her last single, 'I Love This Land,' was released to mark the end of the Falklands war.
In 2009, at age 92, she became the oldest living artist to make it to No. 1 on the British album chart.

I first became obsessed with photography and motion pictures while growing up in post WW2 Manila in the Philippine Islands in the late 1940's/early 1950's. Film noirs were a particular influence. But my first love remains the theater. I acted in numerous amateur productions from 1958 to 1978. In 1979 I earned a MA in drama from the University of Arizona; earlier getting a BA in English from the University of Minnesota, where I co-founded the first film society on campus and ran it for four years.
