Description
Vincent van Gogh (1863-1890) wins the trophy for largely unrecognized, poverty stricken genius, who couldn't exchange a painting for a glass of absinthe; but whose work commands millions today.
His "Starry Night" (1889) is one of his most popular in reproductions. It was painted 13 months before his premature death at 37.
The photograph is an overview of Tombstone, Arizona seven years earlier.
Kirk Douglas did a very credible job playing van Gogh in the Vincent Minnelli directed "Lust For Life" in 1956. Color is so very important in van Gogh's mature work. It is ironic that MGM, for budgetary reasons, used a color stock for the film that quickly faded.
Edward G. Robinson is thanked in the credits. He had one of the finest private collections in the world, which he subsequently sold in a divorce settlement.
