Description
John Dillinger was attracted to South Tucson in early 1934 when he was on the lam from the authorities. He stayed at the Close-Inn Courts and hung out in the adjacent Shamrock Bar, with his back to the wall, in a darkened corner booth.
Even as late as April 1967, when I stayed at the Pepper Tree Court (managed by Charlie Archer) in South Tucson, the area was almost an alien universe of 1930's era motor courts and odd businesses.
When the interstate was completed in the late 1960's most of these establishments withered away. The Close-Inn is long gone.
