Description
"Joe Kidd" was the last Western Clint Eastwood acted in that he did not direct. This photo was taken, in December 1971, just before the Christmas release of the neo-film noir "Dirty Harry," which firmly established his iconic film status.
Eastwood went on to do four sequels over the next 17 years before finally retiring the franchise in "The Dead Pool." The original was directed by his mentor, Don Siegel.
Robert Mitchum had turned down the role of Harry Callahan. Mitchum had no regrets but John Wayne (while never offered the role) wondered how it "had slipped" through his fingers. Frank Sinatra had been inked to star but had an arm injury. Callahan had been written for an actor much older than Clint.
At a press conference in Tucson, in late 1971, he was asked if he watched any of his "Rawhide" TV shows. He responded that he didn't because he looked so young. Eastwood has long ago lost such an abundance of hair.
Duke went on to play contemporary cops in back to back projects both produced by Jules Levy and Arthur Gardner - "McQ" (1974 ) and "Brannigan" the following year.
John Sturges, who had directed Clint in "Joe Kidd," directed Duke in "McQ."
For years Clint and Duke had hoped to star together in a feature but couldn't find a suitable property.
