"The Shadow of the Eagle" is the first of three 12 episode serials John Wayne made for Mascot Pictures in 1932-1933. Wayne traveled mostly by motorcycle, doubled by the amazing Yakima Canutt (1895-1996) in this carnival based Saturday matinee film. Canutt worked with Duke from 1932 to Howard Hawks' "Rio Bravo" (1959).
Yakima is best remembered today for his staging of the chariot race in William Wyler's "Ben-Hur" (1959). He also doubled for Charlton Heston.
Jack Wilson (1926-1999), in turn, specialized in riding a motorcycle in films. He never received a screen credit for any of them. He appeared in Howard Hughes' (1905-1996) favorite film, "Ice Station Zebra' (1968).
None of Wilson's bike riding was included in the final cut of "Hope." But he does get one closeup, as an extra, in a crowd scene. "The Great White Hope" is set in Reno, July 4th, 1910.
I first became obsessed with photography and motion pictures while growing up in post WW2 Manila in the Philippine Islands in the late 1940's/early 1950's. Film noirs were a particular influence. But my first love remains the theater. I acted in numerous amateur productions from 1958 to 1978. In 1979 I earned a MA in drama from the University of Arizona; earlier getting a BA in English from the University of Minnesota, where I co-founded the first film society on campus and ran it for four years. While at the U of A, I studied with the master black and white photo essayist W. Eugene Smith (1918-1978) the last year of his life.
