Cartoonist Chester Gould (1900-1985) drew his Dick Tracy comic strip from 1931 to 1977 at his home in Woodstock, Illinois.
The first Tracy film was Republic's 1937 "Dick Tracy" 15 chapter serial, staring Ralph Byrd (1909-1952) as the square jawed detective. It proved so successful that three sequels followed, but with no additional monies paid to Gould.
RKO Radio produced the first Tracy feature in 1945, calling it "Dick Tracy," also known as "Dick Tracy, Detective." RKO contract player Morgan Conway was also cast in 1946's Dick Tracy vs. Cueball" (1946), but exhibitors clamored for Ralph Byrd.
Two 1947 features followed with Byrd but RKO ceased producing "B" pictures that year. The second one "Dick Tracy Meets Gruesome" had Boris Karloff playing the heavy.

While at the U of A, I studied with the master black and white photo essayist W. Eugene Smith (1918-1978) the last year of his life. I am the last person cited in Jim Hughes' definitive biography of Gene, as I wrote about attending his final...
