Artist's Description

Angie Dickinson's finest hour is as "Feathers" in director Howard Hawks' and Duke Wayne's answer, "Rio Bravo" (1959), to their abhorrence of "High Noon" (1952).

The role was patterned after Lauren Bacall's "Slim" in Hawks' 1944 "To Have and Have Not." Both it and "Rio Bravo" were penned by veteran screenwriter Jules Furthman (1888-1966). "Rio Bravo" was his last film.

He started in silent motion pictures in 1915 and went on to write such classics as "Morocco," "Shanghai Express," "Mutiny On the Bounty." "Only Angel's Have Wings," and the two film noirs, "The Big Sleep," and "Nightmare Alley." He collaborated often with Josef von Sternberg (1894-1969) and Howard Hawks.

Angie is a brunette in "Bravo." She later became a blond of various shades.

In 1979 I earned a MA in drama from the University of Arizona; earlier getting a BA in English from the University of Minnesota, where I co-founded the first film society on campus and ran it for four years. While at the U of A, I studied with the master black and white photo essayist W. Eugene Smith (1918-1978) the last year of his life. I am the last person cited in Jim Hughes' definitive biography of Gene, as I wrote about attending his final...
