Artist's Description

"There is nothing more enticing, disenchanting, and enslaving than the life at sea."

"You can't, in sound morals, condemn a man for taking care of his own integrity. It is his clear duty."

"The sea has never been friendly to man. At most it has been the accomplice of human restlessness."

"The scrupulous and the just, the noble, humane, and devoted natures; the unselfish and the intelligent may begin a movement - but it passes away from them. They are not the leaders of a revolution. They are its victims."

"An artist is a man of action, whether he creates a personality, invents an expedient, or finds the issue of a complicated situation."

"The horror! The horror!"

"Any work that aspires, however humbly, to the condition of art should carry its justification in every line." - Joseph Conrad, 1857-1924

While at the U of A, I studied with the master black and white photo essayist W. Eugene Smith (1918-1978) the last year of his life. I am the last person cited in Jim Hughes' definitive biography of Gene, as I wrote about attending his final...
