Description
Director Raoul Walsh spent four or five months with Pancho Villa shooting some of the "rough battles and smoke" for 1914's "The Life of General Villa." But the hardest scenes were those of Villa riding a horse. Pancho disregarded Walsh's request to ride slowly. Instead he dug in his spurs and flew by the camera, which was not able to pan.
In the firing squad scenes 15 or 20 Federales at a time were lined up against a wall and executed. Groups of men with rock and knives quickly ran to the bodies. Those with rocks opened the mouths to knock out the gold teeth and those with knives cut the pants and removed the boots.
All this was filmed.
When his mentor, D.W. Griffith, screened all the footage shot he remarked that "My God, Raoul, you've scared us all out of the projection room." Walsh responded that, "Well, you wanted the life of Villa - you got it."
"The Life of General Villa" was a smash hit at the box office, especially at the Los Angeles Mexican theater.
Sadly no print exists of the film.
