Artist's Description

The Shadow of the Eagle" is the first of three 12 episode serials he made for Mascot Pictures in 1932-1933. Duke traveled mostly by motorcycle, doubled by the amazing Yakima Canutt (1895-1996) in this carnival based Saturday matinee film. Canutt worked with Duke from 1932 to Howard Hawks' "Rio Bravo" (1959).

Jack Wilson (1926-1999) specialized in riding a motorcycle in films. He never received a screen credit for any of them. He appeared in Howard Hughes' (1905-1986) favorite film, "Ice Station Zebra' (1968).

None of Wilson's bike riding was included in the final cut of "Hope." But he does get one closeup, as an extra, in a crowd scene. "The Great White Hope" is set in Reno, July 4th, 1910.

In 1979 I earned a MA in drama from the University of Arizona; earlier getting a BA in English from the University of Minnesota, where I co-founded the first film society on campus and ran it for four years. While at the U of A, I studied with the master black and white photo essayist W. Eugene Smith (1918-1978) the last year of his life. I am the last person cited in Jim Hughes' definitive biography of Gene, as I wrote about attending his final...
