Description
Sid Wilson (1879-1981), was the last of the authentic 19th century cowboys. His was a life that could not begin to be duplicated today. He combined both the real West, on the cusp of extinction, and the fanciful one of Buffalo Bill's Wild West and the early "flickers."
Wilson was a bronc rider with Bill Cody's show which performed before Britain's Queen Victoria shortly before she died in 1901; having served as England's longest ruling monarch (1837-1901).

Wilson might very well be a rider in this 1902 Buffalo Bill Wild West parade photographed by Edison.

Sid also appeared with Annie Oakley (1860-1926) who is briefly seen in the above Edison "Black Maria" 1894 shot footage. He may also be the bronc rider filmed in the last scene.
Wilson was the stunt double for Hollywood's first cowboy star, "Broncho Billy" Anderson, born Max Aronson in 1880, one year after Sid. Max directed, produced and starred in over 300 short Westerns for his own studio, Essanay. Broncho Billy also acted three parts in the first box office bonanza Western, Edwin S. Porter's 1903 "The Great Train Robbery."
Sid is posing before his stew pot at his Tombstone ranch, down the road south of the O.K. Corral. He rebuilt the Corral in the 1950's according to his whim at the time. A plaque on the wall in the Corral, with an accompanying c. 1958 Petley color postcard, claims Sid made little attempt to make the restoration historically accurate, although the then owner, Jack Main, did not care about such accuracy.
When Wilson was asked in a 1980 interview how the West had changed since his youth he replied with a wistful look: "The West has changed in every way imaginable. The sun and the moon come up the same - and that's about it."
