Description
Around 1772 the Spanish built San Augustin mission. A convento, or residence, was added 8 years later to house visiting clergy.
The adobe built structure was a popular site for Tucson hikers. Local photographer Henry Buehman (1851-1912) was the first person with a camera to document the city. He took this in circa 1874, some 34 years after the mission had been abandoned because of Apache raids.
Buehman was born in Breman, Germany and besides, documenting the changing face of Tucson, took many images of Native Americans.
