Description
Samuel Tso (1922-2012) was a member of the Navajo Code Talkers; a rapidly diminishing group of Native Americans who served in the Pacific in WW2.
They saw action, including Tso, in all the Pacific land invasions, the worst being Iwo Jima. The 35 day battle took 18,000 Japanese lives.
John Wayne played a marine sergeant battling the Japanese on Iwo Jima in "Sands of Iwo Jima" (1949), with veteran director Allan Dwan at the helm.
Joe Rosenthal's classic photo of the flag raising on Mt. Suribachi immortalized that moment in time.
The survivor's of the flag raising appeared in the film including Pima Indian Ira Hayes. Dwan called him "a sad sight who loved the bottle."
Samuel Tso passed away just shy of 90 on May, 10, 2012. He had been Vice President of The Navajo Code Talkers for nearly 10 years.
