Description
The original print of this 180 degree panoramic view of the cavalry passing in review was badly creased in many areas of the frame.
John Ford directed Wayne in three calvary pictures in the late 1940's - early 1950's: "Fort Apache" (1948), "She Wore a Yellow Ribbon," (1949) and "Rio Grand,e" (1950). Collectively they are known as the calvary trilogy.
The first two films in the trilogy were released by RKO Radio, the last "Rio Grande" by Republic.
"Rio Grande" was the first film to pair Duke and Maureen O'Hara, his favorite leading lady.
John Ford needed to direct the film in order to make his long cherished "The Quiet Man" (1952). Republic fully expected "The Quiet Man" to be a financial failure.
There's only one woman who has been my friend over the years and by that I mean a real friend, like a man would be. That woman is Maureen O'Hara. She's big, lusty, and absolutely marvelous definitely my kind of woman. She's a great guy. I've had many friends and I prefer the company of men, except for Maureen O'Hara." ...John Wayne
"But put out of your mind any romantic ideas that it's a way of glory. It's a life of suffering and hardship, an uncompromising devotion to your oath and your duty"...John Wayne as Lt. Colonel Kirby Yorke, "Rio Grande"
