Description
Lee Garmes shot this 1931 proto-noir directed by Rouben Mamoulian; screenplay from a story by Dashiell Hammett.
Gary Cooper and Sylvia Sidney (1910-1999) are the young lovers. Her sad eyes and petite, "waif-like quality" were made for the Depression era.

The wistful, futuristic music in this tribute to Sidney is by Vangelis from the neo-film noir "Blade Runner." The Greek born composer and conductor won an Oscar for 1981's "Chariots of Fire;" which also won for best picture and costumes.
