Description
Timothy O'Sullivan (1840-1882) was one of the true photographic pioneers, noted for his Civil War and American West photos. He risked starvation trecking the wilderness with his wagon and team of horses. While he traveled from Nevada eastward, there is no record of his ever visiting Bisbee, Arizona, the location of the above shot.
Actually Bisbee was then civilized (if measured by the number of saloons) compared to the perils of O'Sullivan's trips. Brewery Gulch still exists today. It can be briefly glimpsed in the 1956 film "Violent Saturday," starring Richard Egan, Ernest Borgnine and Lee Marvin.
It lies along the US/Mexico border and is mainly an artists' community. And its streets are no longer rutted with dirt. Despite San Francisco type steep hills, the horseless carriage now prevails.
