Description
Agustin Victor Casola (1874-1938) was one of the most notable photographers capturing the 1910 Mexican revolution and beyond. Like W. Eugene Smith, his photojournalism images transcend journalism and enter the realm of art.
This photo was taken in the US/Mexico border town of Nogales, Sonora, Mexico, a locale I photographed repeatedly from 1967 to 2006. The long lines waiting to return to the states and the increasing drug war violence have brought my treks to an end. (If you enlarge this shot, pictures of Pancho Villa, Emiliano Zapata and "Black Jack" Pershing can be seen.) Both Villa and Zapata have been portrayed often in motion pictures. Villa played himself in the 1912 "Life of Villa."
These images are from Casola's archive of revolution photos. They are posted on a street photographers shed. A bit of a wheel for his stand is visible on the bottom right.
I have never seen anything remotely similar in the U.S.
