Artist's Description

Duke starred in three Universal Pictures with Marlene Dietrich - "Seven Sinners" (1940) and two the following year, "The Spoilers" and "Pittsburgh."

In her memoirs she is rather uncharitable toward Duke calling him "an ungifted amateur" who was unknown and penniless and "not a bright or exciting type."

Dietrich's first American film was "Morocco," with Gary Cooper, made 10 years earlier. In the picture she was dressed as a man in one scene.

I am the last person cited in Jim Hughes' definitive biography of Gene, as I wrote about attending his final...
