Hi David Congrats on sale, well done

Artist's Description

Besides Chaney, Charles Laughton, James Cagney (in the 1957 bio-film) and Anthony Quinn have played "The Hunchback," based on a 1831 novel by the prolific Victor Hugo (1802-1885).

While the only extant prints of "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" are scrached and duplicates of duplicates, Chaney's most famous film, "The Phantom of the Opera" has survived with quality largely intact including the various tones and two strip color sequence.

"Phantom," written by Gaston Leroux, has its origins in a serialization in a French magazine which ran from September 23, 1909 to January 8, 1910. It never did well in the novel form (1911 & 1920) and was often out of print.
The complete 1925 screen adaptation in a lovely print is on YouTube.

About David Lee Guss

David Lee Guss

I first became obsessed with photography and motion pictures while growing up in post WW2 Manila in the Philippine Islands in the late 1940's/early 1950's. Film noirs were a particular influence. But my first love remains the theater. I acted in numerous amateur productions from 1958 to 1978. In 1979 I earned a MA in drama from the University of Arizona; earlier getting a BA in English from the University of Minnesota, where I co-founded the first film society on campus and ran it for four years. While at the U of A, I studied with the master black and white photo essayist W. Eugene Smith (1918-1978) the last year of his life. I am the last person cited in Jim Hughes' definitive biography of Gene, as I wrote about attending his final...
