Description
Guests at the Gadsden Hotel watched the November 1st 1916, illuminated by search lights, night battle of Agua Prieta from the hotel's roof top.
Villa faced a much larger garrison at Agua Prieta as they had been joined by Carranza troops President Woodrow Wilson had authorized to pass through the US from Coahuila.
Villa's army had to travel by foot from Chihuahua to Sonora as there was no railroad linking the two states. Along the way he lost his hated lieutenant Rodolfo Fierro who perished in a swamp, his body loaded down with booty.
In launching the attack Pancho's army was met by withering fire from machine guns, artillery and rifles.
{Note: The lobby of the Douglas Hotel was on view in John Huston's "The Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean," 1972, to represent the lobby of the opera house where Ava Gardner, as Lilly Langtry, performed.}
