Artist's Description
Kirk Douglas co-starred with Duke Wayne in "The War Wagon" (1967), "Cast a Giant Shadow" (1966) and "In Harm's Way" (1965). Douglas' birth name was Issur Danielovitch Demsky, the only boy in a family of eight children.
His 1988 autobiography, "The Ragman's Son," is a marvelous read as is his 2012 memoir (penned at 95) of making "Spartacus": "I am Spartacus!"
Kirk loved to take his shirt off in films, including "The War Wagon." Howard Keel appears in red face as a bogus Indian.

While at the U of A, I studied with the master black and white photo essayist W. Eugene Smith (1918-1978) the last year of his life. I am the last person cited in Jim Hughes' definitive biography of Gene, as I wrote about attending his final...
