Artist's Description

Julian Rivero's (1890-1976) film career spanned 1923 to 1973. I thought he was just another extra when I photographed him on the set of "The High Chaparral."

(But what a face!) I was not aware that he had appeared in many classic films. In fact I didn't even know his name until I saw him in "The Reward" a few years ago. He was given a screen credit, which was rare. "The Reward" was shot at Old Tucson as was "Strange Lady in Town," in which he appeared uncredited.

Rivero appeared in one John Wayne film: "Tycoon," 1947.

While at the U of A, I studied with the master black and white photo essayist W. Eugene Smith (1918-1978) the last year of his life. I am the last person cited in Jim Hughes' definitive biography of Gene, as I wrote about attending his final...
