Description
"Rio Lobo" was director Howard Hawks final film; then retiring permanently to his home in Palm Springs, California.
Hawks created the Bacall mystique in "To Have And Have Not" and "The Big Sleep."
[Hawks on Bacall and "To Have And Have Not"] ..,."how about a girl that can ..insult people and make them like it? Be insolent and make them like it And Bacall was around. And I'd try out almost every scene on her because she had the quality to do with the story. She said, 'You know how to whistle?' And Christ Almighty anybody who saw it said that was such a great scene, how did you get that in the picture?
We had the goddamnest time working on that picture you ever saw. So when the picture was finished they didn't even know how to spell her name..the Warners publicity department. What the hell, she just hit like a house on fire.
And well Bogart, he just fell in love with her. She couldn't act, she was a personality. She learned to act after three or four pictures in her own particular fashion. What I've always liked is a personality - instead of an actor." - Howard Hawks, 1896-1977
