Description
Gail Russell was yet another casualty of "Tinsel Town," becoming a hopeless alcoholic.
(Two years later she returned to co-star with Duke in "Wake of the Red Witch.")
Duke's favorite screen writer, James Edward Grant, directed his first and only directorial effort. Grant was also an alcoholic.
Russell's last film appearance was in the Wayne produced, Burt Kennedy written and Bud Boetticher directed "Seven Men From Now" (1957).
She died partly from malnutrition, four years later at 37, in bed surrounded by empty alcohol bottles.
Russell was mortifyingly shy, a peculiar affliction for a movie actress whose doe eyed face was blown up 30 feet on the silver screen.
Her first film was playing Stella in the ghost story, "The Uninvited" (1944).
Victor Young composed a haunting theme, "Stella By Starlight," which has become a classic. Perhaps because I have listened to jazz while composing these notes, I have picked Charlie Parker's rendition of "Starlight."
"Bird" is backed up, at his request, by a full orchestra of strings which offends some purists.
