Description
John Wayne as Colonel Mike Kirby in "The Green Berets," 1968. "Ballad" was used on the soundtrack for this pro Viet Nam War effort directed by Duke.
Despite being a laughable, simplistic mess capped by the sun setting in the east, this pro Vietnam project was surprisingly very successful at the box office. Must have been that John Wayne magic.
Despite being dead for years he remains among the top ten most popular movie actors. He was born Marion Morrison and disliked being called John. He was called Duke the name for a dog he had in childhood.
Wayne never legally changed his name. There is no recorded meeting of Duke and Barry. Like Frank Sinatra Duke never served in the military despite almost winning WW2 by himself on the sound stages and back lot at Republic Studios.
Commander John Ford belittled him until the end for shirking his military obligation. Officially he was exempted for being the sole bread winner for 4 children. Those in the know say it was a savvy career move since many of his fellow male movie stars had entered the service leaving a clear field for his movie stardom.
