Description
KVOA TV news director Jake Crellin was the first journalist to arrive on the scene at the December 20th, 1970 Pioneer Hotel fire. He was living a few blocks away in the historic Stork's Nest, which was Tucson's first maternity ward, opened in 1922 by Helen V. Jacobs and closed in 1946 at her death.
Channel Four was notoriously stingy with their 2" video tapes. Because of the historical importance of the tragedy, which took 29 lives, his on air announcement of the fire was saved. This is a re-imagined screen capture from the tape.
Jake's footage shot at the Pioneer, and that of his 4 man news team, was used in the 2010 27 minute documentary "Hot Pion."
