"Doc" was hailed as a "programming genius" by men who worked directly under him. He introduced the half hour "Eyewitness News" concept to Tucson. "The half-hour programs consisted of the news anchor, sports reporter and weather caster all sitting at an anchor desk who would then chat amongst themselves as they would switch between the different elements of the program. Critics called the new style 'happy talk' news."
The theme song used was the asphalt laying sequence music (composed by Lalo Schifrin) in the 1967 Paul Newman starring film "Cool Hand Luke."
Veteran Hank Hubbard had difficulty with the small talk and was shuffled off to be a weatherman.
As is the norm in broadcasting, Doc himself was given the boot after 15 years as GM. He surfaced as adjunct faculty at the University of Arizona. I would occasionally seem him shuffling past on the campus mall.
