Description
"Geronimo" (1939) is the first film with his name in the title. He is played by Victor Daniels (given the name Chief Thundercloud as an honorary title) who was a Native American of Cherokee ancestry.
Geronimo was a medicine man and renowned military leader who was noted for his supernatural spiritual powers and combat prowess. He also knew the public relations value of a striking photo.
When the leader of the Chiricahua Apache was exiled to Oklahoma, he sold photos of himself to survive. In 1904 he was an exhibit at the St. Louis World's Fair. Soon after he was photographed, in a top hat, at the wheel of a touring car on the 101 Ranch in Oklahoma. He apparently did not suffer from culture shock in adjusting to the white man's ways.
"I was born on the prairies where the wind blew free and there was nothing to break the light of the sun. I was born were there were no enclosures."
"I cannot think that we are useless or God would not have created us. There is one God looking down on us all. We are all the children of one God. The sun, the darkness, the winds are all listening to what we have to say."...Geronimo (1829-1909)
Geronimo also features prominently in John Ford's classic "Stagecoach," although off screen. Andy Devine appears in both "Geronimo" and "Stagecoach."
1939 is considered the greatest year in Hollywood history. Besides "Stagecoach," there was "Gone With the Wind," "The Wizard of Oz," "Gunga Din," "Only Angel's Have Wings," Wuthering Heights," "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington" and "The Hunchback of Notre Dame."
Edward Hopper also painted one of his finest works, "New York Movie," in 1939; a lone usherette is lost in her dreams as a film is flashing on the screen in a movie palace.
