Artist's Description

Popular Western sidekick George 'Gabby' Hayes (1885-1969) appeared in 12 Duke films, this being one of them. The ex-vaudevillian was a shrewd investor who lost his money in the 1929 crash but found refuge in "the new fangled talkin' pictures," as Windy, then Gabby, would say.

Besides Duke, he performed sidekick, comic relief duties for William Boyd (1895-1972), Roy Rogers and Randolph Scott. Hayes was "offstage an elegant and well appointed connoisseur and man about town." Rumor has it that he wore fancy dress clothes while dining in his own home. He was the one guest that Johnny Carson often mentioned regretted not getting to appear on his "Tonight Show." I imagine Hayes did not want to blemish his "yer durn tootin' image."

"He's my boy. He's the best. Couldn't think more of him if he was my own son."... George Hayes (1886-1969), talking about John Wayne

In 1979 I earned a MA in drama from the University of Arizona; earlier getting a BA in English from the University of Minnesota, where I co-founded the first film society on campus and ran it for four years. While at the U of A, I studied with the master black and white photo essayist W. Eugene Smith (1918-1978) the last year of his life. I am the last person cited in Jim Hughes' definitive biography of Gene, as I wrote about attending his final...
