Artist's Description

Ann Dvorak (1912-1979), so memorable as Paul Muni's sister, Cesca, in Howard Hawks' "Scarface," plays opposite Duke. She was only offered undistinguished movies in Hollywood over a salary dispute with Warner Brothers when she found out a five year old who had played her son in a film received the same $250 a week. (The tike must have had a more powerful agent!)

Jack Mulhall (1887-1979) who was the lead, as Clancy, in "The Three Musketeers" (1933) with Duke is uncredited here as a gambler.

While at the U of A, I studied with the master black and white photo essayist W. Eugene Smith (1918-1978) the last year of his life. I am the last person cited in Jim Hughes' definitive biography of Gene, as I wrote about attending his final...
