Artist's Description

200 firefighters fought the blaze in Tucson, Arizona's Pioneer International Hotel in the early morning hours of December 20, 1970. 29 people perished. Ladders were not tall enough to reach guests trapped on the top floors. Many jumped to their deaths or died from smoke inhalation. The 41 year old hotel was said to be fireproof, which it was not - having no smoke detectors or sprinkler system.

On no substantial evidence, 16-year-old scapegoat Louis Cuen Taylor was convicted and sentenced to life in prison. In April 2013 he was released after an agreement was reached to set aside his original conviction.

Jack Schaeffer took this arresting image. KVOA TV's 4 man news crew shot film of the fire which was incorporated into the 2010 documentary "Hot Pion."

But my first love remains the theater. I acted in numerous amateur productions from 1958 to 1978. In 1979 I earned a MA in drama from the University of Arizona; earlier getting a BA in English from the University of Minnesota, where I co-founded the first film society on campus and ran it for four years. While at the U of A, I studied with the master black and white photo essayist W. Eugene Smith (1918-1978) the last year of his life. I am the last person cited in Jim Hughes' definitive biography of Gene, as I wrote about attending his final...
