Description
This film is usually picked as one of the top ten film noirs. It cemented Robert Mitchum's deserved reputation as "The King of Film Noir." The RKO film was thankfully released before Howard Hughes bought the studio. He later had a vendetta against Jane Greer (1924-2001), who had the audacity to put her family above her RKO contract.
Both Greer, and Ann Savage (1921-2008) in "Detour," made indelible marks in just one film each. Co-star Kirk Douglas was two years away from his breakthrough film, "Champion."

"Out of the Past", or "Build My Gallows High" as it is titled in England, is stunningly photographed by Nicholas Musaraca (1892-1975). He also shot many other noirs including "Clash By Night," "The Hitchiker," "Stranger on the Third Floor" and "Where Danger Lives."
This Pekin's Cafe photograph has lighting reminiscent of the painter Edward Hopper (1882-1967). It looks like stage lighting; as if the structure is in a theatrical production. So does his 1942 masterpiece "Night Hawks."
To the right of the Cafe sign is a poster advertising the February 6th, 1967 fight between Ernie Terrell and Cassius Clay. Clay had changed his name to Mohammed Ali three years before. And he was champ, so should have been billed first. It was his last of nine bouts defending his title before being stripped of it for refusing to join the Army.
Writer Joyce Carol Oates, in her 2006 book "On Boxing," has called boxing "America's noir sport."
Numerous film noirs are boxing related. These include "The Killers" (1946), "Body & Soul" (1947), "Champion" (1949), "The Set-Up" (1949), "Killer's Kiss" (1955) and "The Harder They Fall" (1956). And the neo-noirs "Fat City" (1972), "Raging Bull" (1980) and "Pulp Fiction" (1994).
