Description
"Touch of Evil" (1958) is thought of as the last film noir made in the classic noir period. It also marked the final time Orson Welles made a studio financed film in Hollywood. And like any of Welles' pictures, it is marked by controversy.
At last count, there are three different versions available for viewing. As she did with "Psycho," Janet Leigh (1927-2004) wrote a book about the making of "Evil." She starred in both but was shockingly killed off in the first third of the Hitchcock directed film.
The Maltese born Joseph Calleia (1897-1975) shines as the honest, devoted police officer, as does Marlena Dietrich (1901-1992) as a form of Greek chorus. Welles wrote, directed and plays the corrupt cop Hank Quinlan.
Cinematographer Russell Metty's (1900-1976) camera swoops, dives and glides in the continuous take at the beginning of this reconstructed version.
Originally credits and music had distracted from the beauty of this sequence. Welles' blocking, with the extras crossing and recrossing the street, mark a great director. And this time we get to hear all the varied music emanating from the honky-tonks in the border town.
Venice, California stands in for Tijuana, Baja California. Mexico.
