The 1849 street set is briefly glimpsed in "Sunset Boulevard" (1950) as William Holden and Nancy Olson take a night walk on the Paramount back lot.
In "The Heiress" Olivia is the only child (Catherine) of a rich, but embittered doctor/father played brilliantly by Sir Ralph Richardson (1902-1983).
He savagely abuses her emotionally, finding her plain look, shyness and lack of social grace a painful reminder of how dazzling her mother had been. (Mom had died while giving birth to Catherine.)
Sir Ralph vehemently objects to Montgomery Clift's (Morris) courting of Catherine; rightly feeling him a fortune hunter. The naive Catherine is bedazzled by the handsome and destitute Morris.
By the end of the picture she realizes Morris' true intention and brutally rejects him in the film...
I first became obsessed with photography and motion pictures while growing up in post WW2 Manila in the Philippine Islands in the late 1940's/early 1950's. Film noirs were a particular influence. But my first love remains the theater. I acted in numerous amateur productions from 1958 to 1978. In 1979 I earned a MA in drama from the University of Arizona; earlier getting a BA in English from the University of Minnesota, where I co-founded the first film society on campus and ran it for four years. While at the U of A, I studied with the master black and white photo essayist W. Eugene Smith (1918-1978) the last year of his life.
