Artist's Description

The great Danish director, Carl Theodor Dreyer (1889-1968) shot "The Passion of Joan of Arc" in 1928 in Paris as a silent film, with no music added. Wearing no makeup, the actors are largely seen in riveting closeups as Joan is put on trial for blasphemy.

This man is remindful of her falsely pious, hateful inquisitors. Falconetti (1892-1946), as Joan, gives an extraordinary performance.

I am the last person cited in Jim Hughes' definitive biography of Gene, as I wrote about attending his final...
