Description
Thomas Alva Edison's (1847-1921) earliest films where shot in his "Black Maria" studio in West Orange, New Jersey. By 1897 his camera crew traveled to the Minnehaha Falls in the Catskill Mountains of New York, a foster child of the original falls in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The "Falls of Minnehaha" lasted all of 31 seconds.
The business savvy Edison was not to be cheated as he twice inserted a few frames of his name and copyright notice.

The very first reality based films were created in 1895 by the Lumiere Brothers in France.

The Lumiere Brothers manufactured film for still cameras. The people leaving the building were their employees.
A favorite of mine is this snowball fight from 1896.

The short vignettes were shot from a stationary camera, in one continuous take.
Cinematographers and directors were soon the two most important contributors to the birth of pictures.
