Artist's Description

F.W. Murnau's (1888-1931) wonderful "Sunrise" was made just before 1927's "The Jazz Singer" spelled the end of the silent film, which only lasted from the early 1890's to 1930; the shortest period for any art form in history.

Those who dislike silent cinema should put aside their prejudice and inhale this wonder.

The cinematography by Charles Rosher (1885-1974) and Karl Struss (1886-1981) is simply extraordinary; utterly ravishing. It was the first film to win an Oscar for cinematography.

While at the U of A, I studied with the master black and white photo essayist W. Eugene Smith (1918-1978) the last year of his life. I am the last person cited in Jim Hughes' definitive biography of Gene, as I wrote about attending his final...
