Description
"The King of Cool" in his next to last film (1980); an actor trapped in his image. The stunning photography by John A. Alonzo is the best part of this Western. McQueen, like Clint Eastwood with "Rawhide," made his mark initially in a TV Western series, "Wanted: Dead or Alive."
This is the look at the Mescal, Arizona set of "Tom Horn" after a winter rain.

McQueen reached iconic status with 1968's "Bullitt."

"I can honestly say he's the most difficult actor I ever worked with."... producer/director Norman Jewison on Steve McQueen; having directed him in "The Cincinnati Kid" (1965) and "The Thomas Crown Affair" (1968).
"To the true gambler, money is never an end in itself, it's simply a tool, as language is to thought."... Edward G. Robinson as Lancy Howard, "The Cincinnati Kid"
"You're good, kid, but as long as I'm around, you're second best."...Edward G. Robinson as master, artist card player to McQueen as "The Kid."
Oddly the multi-lingual, world class art collector, Robinson, was intimated by McQueen in real life, as written in his unfinished autobiography. McQueen was an insecure, inarticulate, beer guzzling motorcyclist, who had a way with machines, but was also a great actor as was Edward G.; who was never once nominated for an Academy Award. Steve got his for "The Sand Pebbles." (1966)
McQueen and crew had left about a year before this picture was taken.
