Description
Motion pictures thrived in the Soviet Union in the 1920's before Josef Stalin fully consolidated his power after the death of Lenin in 1924.
Sergei Eisenstein's 1925 "Battleship Potemkin" is routinely named, in international polls, one of the finest films ever made. In some prints the flag atop the cruiser Potemkin is painted red.
Justly celebrated is the extraordinary Odessa Steps sequence, photographed by the great Lithuanian cinematographer Eduard Tisse. The film was edited by Eisenstein without credit.
