The 1949 British made production, about a boy who can predict the outcome of horse races, is based on a 1926 short story by D.H. Lawrence (1885-1930). Sir John Mills (1908-2005) produced and acted in the movie.
Three years before Mills played the grown up Pip in David Lean's (1908-1991) "Great Expectations," based on Charles Dicken's (1812-1870) much loved 1861 novel.

Dicken's works have never gone out of print. So far there have been some 180 motion picture and TV adaptations, starting with 1913's "The Pickwick Papers," Dicken's first full novel published in 1837.
His 1843 immortal novella "A Christmas Carol" remains Dicken's best known creation.
The 1951 film version, staring Scotsman Alastair Sim (1900-1976) as Ebenezar Scrooge, still remains the finest.

In 1979 I earned a MA in drama from the University of Arizona; earlier getting a BA in English from the University of Minnesota, where I co-founded the first film society on campus and ran it for four years. While at the U of A, I studied with the master black and white photo essayist W. Eugene Smith (1918-1978) the last year of his life. I am the last person cited in Jim Hughes' definitive biography of Gene, as I wrote about attending his final...
