Artist's Description

The Mutoscope machines (which exhibited fast moving) cardboard cards were still in use well into the 1950's. In 1950 I visited a penny arcade, in Excelsior, Minnesota which had dozens of these devices lined up in rows. In 1955 I went to "The Pike," in Long Beach, California. That fabulous amusement park had a few of these antiques in use, still asking a penny.

Now we flash forward to Times Square in NYC in 1977, before the sleazy porn stores were done away with. It was quite common to see smarty tailored foreign born businessmen/diplomats, hunkered down in front of a machine, now costing 25 cents, for a few minutes of 8mm porn. What amazed me were the signs over the machines, listing what depraved wonders the films specialized in.

From the very beginnings of film history, cinematographers have been vital collaborators in creating a visual language "far more complex than words."

About David Lee Guss

David Lee Guss

I first became obsessed with photography and motion pictures while growing up in post WW2 Manila in the Philippine Islands in the late 1940's/early 1950's. Film noirs were a particular influence. But my first love remains the theater. I acted in numerous amateur productions from 1958 to 1978. While at the U of A, I studied with the master black and white photo essayist W. Eugene Smith (1918-1978) the last year of his life. I am the last person cited in Jim Hughes' definitive biography of Gene, as I wrote about attending his final...
